Travel insurance

Several UK insurance companies are willing to cover pre-existing conditions including haemophilia and, in most cases, HIV and hepatitis C. As with most insurance companies, families travelling together will have to be insured with the same company in case one member of the party becomes ill and the rest have to fly home early or prolong their stay. The Haemophilia Society has produced a fact sheet on travel insurance that lists insurers (most of them recommended) that will provide cover for people with haemophilia. This can be downloaded from www.haemophilia.org.uk

Insurance policies should be checked carefully to ensure that all eventualities are covered, especially in relation to the possibility of needing emergency medical care. The cost of any treatment you are taking with you and the cost of treating spontaneous bleeds should all be covered. It is recommended that all health issues are discussed honestly with the insurance company before purchasing an insurance policy. Sports or past-times where there may be a risk of injury might well be excluded.
