Moving out

For a young person with haemophilia, the key to successfully becoming more independent and being able to move out of the family home is proving that they have control over their life and can cope on  their own. Parents may be naturally over-protective and reluctant to give up their responsibility for keeping their child safe – after all, they will have been doing that job for a very long time!

Things to consider before moving out of the family home include:

  • How well can you explain your condition to your new house-mates?
  • Do you have a form of identification that you can carry at all times in case of accidents (e.g. a MedicAlert bracelet)?
  • Does your haemophilia centre know where you are going or will you need to find a new one?
  • Will you need a new GP and dentist at your new address?
  • Will there be an appropriate place to store your clotting factor at your new home?
